Old fashion oatmeal cookies

These no-frills old fashion oatmeal cookies will satisfy those cookie cravings with so little effort on your part. In the original recipe sour milk is used as the wet ingredient. This recipe uses buttermilk or sour cream as a substitution.

Requiring just a few ingredients this recipe is a breeze to make.

Grandmas Old Fashion Oatmeal Cookies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups quick oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup buttermilk or sour cream


  • Preheat oven to 375°F, Mix dry ingredients together. Melt butter and shortening and mix with dry ingredient. Mix in milk until just combined. Don’t over-mix or oatmeal may turn to mush.  
    Using a cookie scoop or large spoon, drop scoops about 2 inches apart on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Flatten by pressing cookie balls down to roughly a quarter inch thick with a fork dipped in flour or just use your hand.
    Bake 12 – 18 minutes until edges turn golden brown.
    For a crispier cookie bake at 350°F for 20 – 25 mins or until edges brown

Additions for Oatmeal Cookies

Take your cookies up a notch by adding a half cup of raisins, dried cranberries, chocolate chips or nuts of your choice.
