Apple Crisp

apple crisp
One of the most popular ‘crisps’ we make around here is with apples. Sometimes if there’s a little extra fruit like strawberries or the odd pear or peach that should be eaten or used in some way, those usually get added to the crisp also. For a little twist to your ‘crisp’ try adding a handful of nuts or coconut to your topping.

Ingredients

  • Apple Crisp Bottom:
  • 6 cups peeled and chopped apples
  • Pinch Nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Dash salt
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Butter a 9 inch square baking dish. Mix all the apple crisp bottom ingredients together and place in buttered dish.
  2. Mix all the topping ingredients together. Rub the butter between your fingers to make small pieces like squished peas.
  3. Sprinkle topping over apple crisp bottom.
  4. Bake at 400°F for 30 – 40 minutes until the topping is brown and apples feel tender.
  5. *note if topping is getting too brown and apples still feel too firm then cover with foil and continue baking.
